Type-Moon have always found success behind their invigorating blend of magic and supernatural elements. And with the release of Fate/Zero, this, for me, was no exception at all. Once again a combination of a darker style of animation and plot tales, reveal a great anime to immerse yourself in.
Fate/Zero chronicles the proceedings leading up to and during, the Holy Grail war that takes place between the strongest magical families of the world. With the Holy Grail itself offering the victor 'one wish', the battles forthcoming are visually amazing. This being the fourth war for the grail, the magical families have gone to extreme lengths to ensure their success. The Einzbern family employs the infamous mercenary Emiya Kiritsugu, known as the "Mage Killer" who will use whatever means necessary to win.
In my opinion, this anime has taken the dark brooding atmosphere to new heights of perfection. The tone couldn't be more suitable for the story. So that being said, the story itself is heavily focused on the planning and preparation before the upcoming Holy Grail War. This really results in a more immersive plot and understanding of characters. You understand who they are, what they are willing to do, their morals and attitudes as well.
There is a heavy focus on build up rather than pointless, thoughtless, fighting. Thus, it will keep you thinking but also lets you enjoy the visuals and dialogue. I must add, if you enjoyed Code Geass or Death Note, Fate/Zero involves similar tactics but with an emphasis on planning. That aside, the battles between the servants are nothing short of incredible.
The servants are manifestations of historical figures of import. Either heroes, kings, leaders or history's worst. This makes for such a broad spectrum of possibilities and magical powers. I can't fault the series at all, except one filler episode, and I do recommend it.
Conclusion
The series isn't perfect at all, but it comes pretty damn close at times. I found it to be a good combination between tactics, magic and action. At times there can be a huge visual downtime, when there seems to be endless dialogue. But I find it a minor issue.
