This is another one of Funimation's overhyped anime that they beat to death before they even start working on it. For fans of the series already, that want to see the English dub too, they might be left slightly disappointed. You'd think that voice quality and story conversion to be not super important, but Soul Eater proves otherwise. But don't be discouraged by that, the art is great, the characters are very fun and the story is somewhat unique. Anyway, on to the anime..
Taking place on earth, or something like earth anyway, Soul Eater follows the narrative of students from the "Death Weapon Meister Academy". The academy consists of humans who can turn themselves into weapons (or vice versa) and the Meisters that control them. So there is a team that usually consists of a Meister and a human, who venture out into the world to collect 99 Ken-Shen eggs (the souls of evil humans) and one witch. They need this to convert one of the humanoid-weapons into a death scythe fit for use by the Shinigami. In particular it follows three separate groups, the first of which is Maka and Soul Eater, secondly is Death the Kid and the Demon Twin Gunz, and thirdly is Black Star and Tsubaki. Since the show establishes what the teams have to do, you would think it would play that out for a little while. However, it quickly turns into a 'save the world from the evil monster' type of storyline and throws the latter away.
Conclusion
Even with the messy initial story, Soul Eater is still a shonen anime but...without the thousands of episodes like Naruto or Bleach. The show actually has an ending! And with much fewer episodes, it crams everything that make the shonen type anime good, into a mere 51 episodes. Including the comedy but not limited to the animation. In fact, the animation is really quite fantastic and perfectly fitting for the show's narrative and tone. In spite of the somewhat confusing start to the series, Soul Eater does a lot of things right. The producer Bones (famous for Wolf's Rain, Full Metal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club), has inevitably built a fun show to watch.
