Tokyo Ghoul is visually quite impacting and beautifully animated. However, I feel it is let down by its sub-par storyline/ plot and lack of character development/ motive. As interesting as it is visually, it suffers severely in the plot department. You'll often find yourself asking 'why?' only to get, for lack of a better word, a boring answer. I'd like to say the supernatural battles and ghoul fight scenes make up for this...however I think it falls short. That aside, the fight scenes are beautiful, gory and blood filled! Even with the illogical decisions of the characters, there isn't many cliff hanger episodes with only a few climactic battles. Personally I think it is a bit of a mess and raises more questions that than it answers.
Conclusion
Without delving too deep into the story and keeping this rather spoiler-free, I think most of the time I was left unsatisfied and felt it needed more plot development and a bit of mystery. If you like a fantastic visual with some supernatural prowess thrown into the mix, it accomplishes that. However, if you love a deep storyline and nail biting cliff hangers, maybe give this one a miss.
Pro's
- Visually immersive with great fight scenes
- Creative and strange ghouls with awesome fighting powers
- Only 2 seasons are currently out, good to watch on a rainy weekend
Con's
- Lack of plot and character development
- Anti climactic most of the time
- Too many new characters with no introduction
Final Rating: 6.5/10
Tokyo Ghoul
27th of September 2015
Set in the current modern day world, Tokyo Ghoul follows the story of a young student, Ken Kaneki, who has found himself amid terrifying, strong 'ghouls' after a date-gone-wrong. They roam the night and prey on humans for food. These ghouls can only eat human flesh and drink special coffee, anything else will have them feeling sick and weakened. Police are largely overpowered by the supernatural ghouls and another task force has been established with the intent to eradicate them. Back to our main character... Kaneki, who has become a half human, half ghoul hybrid after a close encounter with a particularly vicious ghoul. Kaneki struggles to come to terms with his new 'other half' and has little support to help him initially. However this all changes when he finds his place within a small community of ghouls that maintain balance with humans.
