Light Yagami is the protagonist in the famed anime, Death Note. He is a young, intelligent and over achieving student who quickly develops a god-complex after receiving the Death Note from a Shinigami. He is quick to put it to the test and very prompt to begin his 'plan' for the world by ridding it of the scum of the earth. Criminals, or yet to be convicted criminals, are now Light's victims as he employs the power of the Death Note to kill them off. As he grows more infamous or famous (depending on your views), the people of Japan label him 'Kira'.

He is characterized as hard working, naturally talented and a genius. A refreshing change for anime, he is one of the most intelligent main characters of any anime. With such intellect, he is able to predict the moves of his enemies (mainly 'L') and manage to stay many moves ahead. Even in impromptu situations his actions are superior. Being frustrated by the lack of justice in the world and the power of the newly acquired Death Note, an egotistical and sociopathic interior is brought into context.

His main enemy, for the most part, is 'L'. Woo is almost intellectually on par with Light and is the main investigator behind the Kira case. Light sees this as a challenge, and still determined to carry out his mass killings, in spite of L's appearance. Light seems to thrive at the notion of being caught and playing a game of chess between geniuses.
