Toshio Ozaki is the village doctor and main protagonist in the anime, Shiki. His personality represents what is stereotypical of a doctor. He overworks himself, cares for his patients and carries the burden of a dead patient on his own shoulders. He always puts his patients lives above all else and even uses drastic measures in order to save them. He can be sarcastic at times but serious when it really matters and he is always kind to his friends.

When the village, Sotoba, is overrun by, what is initially thought to be an epidemic, Toshio is quick to dig deeper in search of the truth. Once he uncovers the mystery of the numerous deaths, he is quick to act by himself even after the allegations are dismissed by most of the villages people. As he is a man that doesn't like to lose, he employs various tactics and cunning wit to out-strategize the Shiki and help the village achieve victory.

One must also mention that his wife, after being converted into the very enemy he wishes to eradicate, was dissected and experimented on by the doctor in order to find a weakness to the Shiki. He then uses his findings as proof to the village people in order for them to believe his claims.

On a personal level, he was what made the series more tolerable, as most of the characters were just plain boring. Additionally, he is the first to realise the idea of 'what is dead, should stay dead', and for that he earns praise.
